Are You Waiting for Inspiration Before You Can Begin?

“A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don’t need it.” - Bob Hope

The Muse is the same way.  The Muse is a fair-weather friend, one who never comes when you need her most but sidles up to you when you no longer care. Don’t wait for her. She toys with you by not being very reliable or consistent. One day she is there waiting for you in her high-heeled red boots with a mischievous smile. She pulls you near and lets you breathe in her perfume. You are intoxicated, under her spell. So you follow her mindlessly, thoughtlessly, imagining that she will be there for you time and time again.  But she won’t.  She’s not yours to keep or even to hold for more than a few moments. The next time you come looking for her, she is nowhere to be found, only a distant wisp of her perfume remains. You just hear her laughs echoing somewhere. She won’t return your calls. The more desperate you are, the more she ignores you. You are the only one you can rely on.  Don’t rely on the Muse. You do not need her to begin.  Sit down and do your work.  Every day.  The Muse will come of her own accord when you can prove to her that you don’t need her.

  1. I really like that quote and your comments. I’m trying to prove to her that I don’t need her as well. =)

  2. Hello,

It’s a beautiful post regarding the Muse. I have been waiting for a Muse most of my life, however, sometimes you have to make the Muse come to you, instead of the other way around.

Sometimes, inspiration comes when you begin working.
Good article, important for us creative types!
