About
Welcome! You’ve come to an interesting place. Have a seat, take off your shoes, and relax. Here, you will find some advice about life that comes from a different perspective.
Why The Truth Curve?
Like a lot of people these days, I spend a significant portion of my day online, reading. I read news, articles, and blogs. I am particularly seduced by articles that promise to give me 10 tips for reducing my stress, 5 reasons to get a better night’s sleep, or 8 easy ways to incorporate exercise into my busy day. But once I read such an article, I come away disappointed. Who doesn’t already know that you should exercise to relieve stress or that you shouldn’t drink coffee too close to bedtime? I find most of this advice pointless, shallow and a waste of time. I think many people don’t get much out of these articles. Once you’ve heard all the common wisdom, there is not much that these articles can give you above and beyond what you already know.
There is a lot of interesting research in psychology, biology, and economics today that does not get disseminated in the right way to a more general audience. Most articles I see that try to convey new scientific findings to a general audience are still shallow as far as advice goes. Either the advice is obvious and presented in the form of “5 tips” or the findings are just reported to a lay audience without any conclusion about how to apply that knowledge to his or her own life.
That’s why I want to dig deeper. I’m a writer, social scientist, philosopher, and wisdom-seeker. I read voraciously, especially books about psychology, biology, economics, technology, or social phenomena. I extract interesting concepts or ideas from these books and apply them to other domains of life, often in paradoxical ways. This comes so naturally to me that I never thought of this as a talent until recently. One day I had the realization, Why not do it more publicly so that others could benefit too?
And so The Truth Curve was born (on Groundhog Day, 2007, if you must know).
So the purpose of this site is to combine research findings, ancient and modern wisdom, metaphors, and my own musings to create rich, detailed, and actionable advice for living.
